Barcode Scanner

IT Jobs

To understand how a barcode scanner work, it is important to first understand how barcodes are produced and being read.

Pool Supplies

Each barcode has specific symbols defined as a series of bars in a barcode. The way to differentiate the barcode is by the height and width as well as the bar spacing. Each strip of bar can represent a number, character or alphanumeric character depending on which type of barcode symbology set is used.
Usually a barcode contains a start and end bar to denote the starting and ending point of the barcode. Sometimes, there is an additional bar called the checksum bar. The purpose of the checksum bar is used to determine whether the barcode is correct after calculation and ensures the accuracy of the barcode.

The barcode scanner’s photosensors can then read the barcodes and convert them to electrical pulses. Since each strip of bar is equivalent to a character, the barcode software can easily convert these electrical pulses into readable text that can be displayed on a monitor. This process is actually very fast and only takes a few milliseconds.

Nowadays there are many varieties of barcode scanners models. Their usage depends a lot on the type of industry and the work environment. Examples are desktop models, handheld and portable models.

One of the most popular type is the wireless barcode scanner. They connect to the base station or workstations wirelessly and can transmit data back to the terminal as long as they are within the wireless range radius.

Wireless barcode scanner are often used in the warehouse industry where workers can easily scan a barcode that can be placed in awkward positions or angles. It is also used in industries where goods are often moving from one location to another. Using a wireless barcode scanner allows freedom of movement and thus more efficient.

The Future For Barcode Reader Manufacturers

They’re not really the greatest invention of the recent century. To claim such would be an unbelievable hyperbole. But barcode readers have attained, and kept, their place as indispensable tools for many businesses the world over. Though the world in general may not have been revolutionized by their introduction to several industries, barcode readers have made quite a fortune for benefiting enterprises and barcode reader manufacturers alike.

Indeed, barcode reader manufacturers have enjoyed tremendous and sustained profit by reason of their main products. Barcode readers have become a must in certain fields that demand for the said products has never waned, instead, has experience a steady increase throughout the years. As a result, barcode reader manufacturers are always aiming to discover new applications and improvements for their cash cow.

The Driving Force Behind Barcode Reader Manufacturers

Like most industry giants, barcode reader manufacturers discovered a need, and they provided for such a need through their worthy invention: barcode readers.

Before barcode reader manufacturers started to distribute their products, businesses involved with the identification and verification of items, especially those in minor or major transits, have been fraught with errors and delays. The reason? Everything was being carried out manually, hence the processes are susceptible to human fallibilities.

Barcode reader manufacturers offered barcode readers to solve these problems. The bread and butter of these barcode reader manufacturers was able to make things more accurate and convenient, resulting in a more efficient and speedy execution of the said processes.

Barcode Reader Manufacturers And The Developments In The Industry

Since the time they have started to offer barcode readers for the usage of relevant businesses, barcode reader manufacturers have likewise introduced improvements over the original models. Today, barcode readers come in a variety of forms, care of the many barcode reader manufacturers in the industry.

Fixed readers, portable batches and portable RF readers are just some of major types of barcode readers that barcode reader manufacturers are currently selling in the market. They come in further variations, of course. Barcode reader manufacturers have also developed scanner-based barcode readers, camera-based barcode readers, and CDD barcode readers for businesses with equally varied needs.

Barcode reader manufacturers also change the products to conform to current demands. For example, barcode reader manufacturers today offer barcode readers that could decode numeric barcodes. These barcode reader manufacturers also offer barcode readers that could translate barcodes using alphabetic characters. They also offer barcode readers that could identify and verify barcodes with lines of fixed or varying lengths.

Barcode Reader Manufacturers And The Future

Judging from history, only good things can be expected from barcode reader manufacturers in the coming years. The leading barcode reader manufacturers of today such as Symbol Technologies, Intermec, Opticon, Argox and American Microsystems, Ltd. Are already positioning themselves for their continued success in the future. They are heavily investing on their research and development departments to come up with better applications and features for the barcode readers they will manufacture for tomorrow.

It is an exciting time for both interested businesses and barcode reader manufacturers. Fueled by unceasing success, the future does look bright for those tools that have helped boost the efficiency of countless businesses throughout the years.

Accurate Filing is Achieved with Barcode and OCR

Typically, businesses generate extreme amounts of paperwork yearly. It becomes a problem to not only file your paper documents in their proper locations, but to retrieve them at a later date. It takes time and labor to organize business records. To compound the problem, if you cannot readily find important documents, customers will be dissatisfied, auditors will be less than understanding, and your business’ ratings will decrease.

An electronic records management system together with barcode recognition and/or OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is a reliable solution to your records filing and storage needs. Businesses across all industries are currently taking advantage of this technology. With an electronic filing system, documents are scanned and stored as digital images. Paper documents can be virtually eliminated.

Barcode is a representation of information in a visual format. The newer symbologies of barcode include characters such as numbers and letters. Documents that are electronically captured can be accurately filed using barcode or OCR. With self-adhesive labels, barcodes can even be added to documents originally generated without a barcode symbol.

To take advantage of this technology, you need to install an electronic records management system that can identify the data that needs barcode and/or insert the proper barcode symbology. Electronic documents are automatically filed, reading barcode or OCR to determine the proper location.

Through barcode and OCR, your business can dramatically increase its filing accuracy. Additionally, no repeated keying of data is required which makes barcode and OCR reading the fastest options for storing electronic documents in an electronic records management system.

When OCR is incorporated into a records management system, the computer reads text from paper and translates the characters into machine-recognizable data. Because of advancements in OCR technology, many fonts, but not all fonts can be recognized.

Although it has some advantages, OCR is usually not as reliable as barcode reading. OCR requires clear, high quality text for filing the electronic document correctly. There are other limitations to OCR. Many OCR solutions are unable to read non-Latin characters, small print, or mathematical symbols.

In barcode reading, the lengths and positions of the white spaces and black bars are analyzed by a computer. The scanning sensor detects the light that’s reflected back from the barcode and converts this information into data the computer recognizes. The symbols of barcode are designed for a computer to read. Costly errors are prevented because of the computer’s precision in reading barcode.

The decision to improve your records management system and take advantage of OCR or barcode reading is an important step in managing your business’ documents. There is no faster, easier way to file and maintain your documents. Each method has a few limitations, but regardless of your choice, barcode and OCR both surpass filing paper documents. Taking advantage of these technologies is a sure way to increase filing accuracy and reduce overhead costs to your business.

Disadvantages of Barcode Scanners

We hear the statement “disadvantages of barcode scanners” from time to time and as we probe the customers that believe this we find a common theme. Most customers that believe there are disadvantages of barcode scanners are customers that are not using them and keep a well managed manual system in place because it works for them.

Many manufacturers and distributors still manage inventory on log sheets and with index card systems. This was a tried and true method for years, but in today’s world of speed and error free work, you should not rely on your employees always getting the number right. The advantage of the barcode scanner is that it reads what is there. There is no way the scanner can transpose numbers or recognize the number 0 as a letter o or a number 1 with a letter l. There are many human error elements that lead to duplicate work because of errors and the barcode scanner prevents the errors of transposing and mis-reading number and letter characters.

Now the disadvantages of barcode scanners are usually perceived as cost, change, and durability of the rough environment that customers may think, there is no way we can automate. Well, lets look at each disadvantage at a time.

The disadvantage of a barcode scanner because of cost is a real easy one to tackle. The costs have really come down on both inventory management software packages and barcode scanning hardware. The payback in time saved due to error free work and the speed in which cycle counts and inventories can be done can provide a return on the investment within 3-4 months. Not bad!

The disadvantage of barsoda Scanner when it comes to change is referencing change to the work place. Many organizations that have been in business for many years have really tweaked their processes and have many employees that have been trained and know the current way of doing things. Well, to keep up with the competitive nature of business, change must be a part of the plan. Adding barcode scanning capabilities is really not that big of a change. If you think about it, the scanner really only writes the data for the employee. So, it really does not change much, it just makes the process easier and employees usually embrace it. Really, who likes to hand right everything anyway?

Now we are down to the last issue of durability as a disadvantage of barcode scanners. Today, barcode scanners are designed for all kinds of environments from libraries to industrial steel plants. If durability is what you want, take a look at this workhorse that has been around for over 10 years. It is the Quick Scan 6000, now replaced by the Scanner. This scanner is known as the Hammer! Over the years it has been run over by forklifts, dropped from high ladders, covered in ash and it still keeps scanning. There are many newer models in the market today, but that is an example on durability in a barcode scanner.

About Barcode and Barcode Scanners

A barcode helps in automatic data identification and collection. This was first invented in 1952 by Bernard Silver and Joseph Woodland. This barcode basically has parallel lines or bards of different width and thickness. The bars represent the binary numbers 0 and 1, and the sequence starts from 0 to 9 which are processed with a help of a computer. This information on the barcode can be read only with the help of a barcode scanner, which needs an optical laser connected to a computer system to read. The code can be read by moving the laser or the barcode pen across the bars, and the computer gets the information embedded in the barcode(s).

So what is this barcode scanner or reader and how does this work? A barcode reader is an electronic gadget which reads the information embedded inside the barcodes. The barcode scanner consists of a light source, photo conductor and a lens. Here the optical impulses are converted into electrical impulses. Most of the barcode scanners contain a decoder circuit that analyzes the image of the barcode with the help of a photo conductor and this is sent to the scanner’s output port. There are three kinds barcode readers; the handheld readers are use for semi-automatic reading, the fixed mount readers are used for automatic reading and finally, the reader gates are used for automatic scanning.

There are four kinds of technologies being used these bar code scanners. The pen type readers have a photodiode and a light source; to read what is on the barcode, the pen has to be moved gradually across the bar. The laser scanner also works just like the pen type reader, here a laser beam is used instead and the light source is just the same. A CCD reader also called as LED scanners use an array of many tiny light sensors which are arranged in a row at the head of the scanner/reader. The main difference between the pen reader and the CCD reader is that, the CCD reader measures the emitted ambient light from the bar; however laser scanners and pen type readers measure the reflected light of a particular frequency originating from the scanner. The newest and the latest type are the camera-based readers which are 2D imaging scanners, which uses a tiny camera to capture the barcode’s image. Here the video camera uses the same technology as in CCD, the only difference is that the CCD scanner has a row of sensors and the camera had hundreds of sensors in two dimensional arrays which can produce an image.

Automate Your Business with Barcodes

Logistics, asset management and inventory control are so important to any business. Whether you operate a point of sale business, a shipping center, or any business that ships or receives supplies or products, it is difficult to manually keep track of what is coming and going. Bar codes and automation save time, money and lost assets. This method, once fully implemented, can save thousands or even millions of dollars over a short period of time.

You may think it will cost a bundle of money to implement a barcode system to control and track assets. This is not true. A barcode label printer is quite affordable, durable and long lasting. Most businesses only require a few of these devices to effectively manage assets. The very small investment pays for itself almost immediately.

The label printer produces printouts that are durable and will not smear or smudge so they can easily be read by a barcode reader. Most even have memory functions to store the most frequently printed label information. Also, an entire database of inventory and the associated barcodes can be downloaded from a computer into the label maker for easy printing of labels for each and every item in your inventory.

The Brother International TP-1650 P-Touch Electronic Labeling System is one example of a label printer with the capabilities you need to implement automated inventory control, barcode- tracked logistics or asset management into your business. It quickly creates automatically sized labels that can include graphics and can even sequentially number the codes.

Even the aerospace industry is using automated logistics functions using barcode labels created by the same type of label printer that you can use at your own place of business. As soon as items arrive, create their unique barcode markings and apply the printed label to the item. Scan the item into the computer system. This will add to your inventory count of that particular asset. When the item is sold, shipped or removed from inventory through use or another method, scan the barcode again and your asset count will be reduced. This allows you to know, up to the minute, exactly how much inventory you have on hand of each item and the actual value of your total inventory.

The use of a label printer for this purpose can also identify inventory reduction that is the result of shrinkage. Shrinkage is a term that refers to inventory that disappears through theft, personal use, or other unethical means. You may think you have trustworthy employees only to learn that you are losing a lot of money because someone is stealing inventory and selling it on the side.

Why wonder what you have on hand to sell or use in your business enterprise? Why manually count inventory, consuming time and therefore money? Know in an instant how many widgets are in the widget inventory and the exact value of your widget inventory. It’ so simple and easy when you implement a plan where every employee uses a label printer to create barcodes and labels to mark the items as they come into inventory and as they leave your asset stock.
